Events Planned by the IWM for 2008 and Early 2009

The Imperial War Museum has a number of exhibitions and special events planned for 2008/9, some of which will commemorate the 90th anniversary of the end of World War I.

The Imperial War Museum has scheduled an exciting year of exhibitions.

  • The Children's War: Imperial War Museum London (18th March 2005 - 1st January 2010). This semi-permanent exhibition explores the home front through the eyes of children. The 1940s house shows what life was like during World War II.
  • For Your Eyes Only: Ian Fleming to James Bond: Imperial War Museum London (17 April to 1 March 2009). This exhibition looks at the life and work of the creator of the world's most famous spy. The show explores how far James Bond was an expression of Fleming's experiences in World War II and to what extent Bond was the result of the author's fertile imagination.
  • Dig for Victory: The War on Waste: St James’s Park and Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms (May – October 2008). "Dig for Victory", a major campaign during World War II, encouraged the population to grow produce to alleviate food shortages. St James's Park will be the setting for a1940s allotment which will be compared with a modern-day allotment. An accompanying exhibition, The War on Waste, will be located nearby at The Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms.
  • Horrible Histories: The Frightful First World War: Imperial War Museum North - The Exhibition (24 May 2008 – January 2009). This exhibition, designed for children, is based on Terry Deary's book, Horrible Histories: The Frightful First World War. On display will be sound recordings, art, film, photographs and items from the museum's collections.
  • From War to Windrush: Imperial War Museum London (13 June 2008 - 29 March 2009). The MV Empire Windrush arrived in Britain 60 years ago. This exhibition will explore the experiences of immigrants from the Caribbean during the First and Second World Wars. Items on display will include pages from the MV Empire Windrush passenger list and documents belonging to passengers on the ship.
  • Military Pride: Imperial War Museum North (12 July – 12 October 2008). This show is timed to correspond with the Manchester Pride Festival. It will explore the experiences of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people within the context of military service and conflict through their personal stories and photographs. The exhibition will include a timeline of legislature and policies within the Armed Forces since 1945.
  • Holocaust Art (working title): Imperial War Museum London (September 2008 - July 2009). On display will be Holocaust-related art by unknown occupants of concentration camps. Work by Leslie Cole, Doris Zinkeisen, Roman Halter and Edith Birkin will be displayed side by side with work by contemporary artists Paul Ryan and Darren Almond.
  • In Memoriam: Remembering the Great War: Imperial War Museum London (September 2008 – March 2009). An exhibition to mark the 90th anniversary of the Armistice will explore the personal stories of everyone involved in the Great War: from children to airmen, nurses to writers, the disabled to the shell shocked.
  • The Last Post: Remembering the First World War: Churchill Museum and Cabinet War Rooms (October 2008 – January 2009). This exhibition will explore wartime correspondence and the vital part played by Britain's Royal Mail during the First World War.
  • Stranger In The House: Imperial War Museum North (November 2008 – February 2009). This exhibition will explore the women's perspective to provide answers to the question: What happens when the men return home after years at war?
