'Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones', is supported by drop-ins, demonstrations, lectures, workshops and courses exploring the design, production and wearing of hats.

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones is the Victoria and Albert's first exhibition devoted to the history and creation of headwear. The show addresses a number of issues:

  • Where, when and why should a hat be worn?
  • How should a hat be worn?
  • How does one choose the right hat for the right face?
  • How is a hat designed?
  • How is the hat made?

All these questions, and more, will be investigated further in the programme of free and charged events that accompanies the exhibition. Speakers will include V&A curators Oriole Cullen and Claire Wilcox, fashion journalist Colin McDowell and milliners Caroline Morris and Stephen Jones. If the popularity of the exhibition is anything to go by, all these events will be very well attended.

Free Events at the V&A

  • Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones - 26th March 2009. This British Sign Language interpreted tour for people with disabilities will be lead by V&A curator, Oriole Cullen.
  • Hats Off to Fashion - 28th March 2009. This event is described by the V&A as a 'digital drop-in'. Participants will have their photograph taken and then try on hats 'virtually' from the exhibition.
  • Mad Hatters - 27th March 2009. Visitors can participate in re-fashioning workshops, enjoy live music and watch a contemporary Easter bonnet parade.
  • Vintage Feather Trimmings - 29th March 2009. During this demonstration the use of feathers as trimmings will be shown. Visitors will have the opportunity to try some of the techniques for themselves.

Charged Events at the V&A

  • Stephen Jones - On Hats - 27th March 2009. Stephen Jones is regarded as one of the most original and, some would say, outlandish hat designers. Jones will talk about his career, his inspiration and his favourite creations.
  • How to Wear Hats - 28th March 2009. How are millinery trends and fashions created? How, when and where should hats be worn? What suits, and what doesn't suit, which face? All will be revealed by professional buyers and stylists from the London store, Selfridges.

Courses at the V&A

  • The Artful Milliner, Historical and Contemporary Hat Making, Tuesdays, 14th April 2009–19th May 2009. This course, lead by milliner Caroline Morris, is suitable for all levels, but basic sewing skills will be helpful. Participants will learn basic millinery skills and techniques.
  • Stephen Jones Workshop - 15th April 2009. Oriole Cullen will discuss the history of hats, their design, and their place as a contemporary fashion accessory. In the afternoon participants will visit Stephen Jones' workshop at Covent Garden. Jones will talk about the development of his collection and participants will see inside his workshop.

Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones will be open until 10th May 2009. Full details of times, locations and charges for all events are available from the V&A.
