The V&A is offering courses and family events for adults and children such as film shows, BSL interpreted tours, touch tours, art and craft activities and dress making.

Maharaja – the Splendour of India's Royal Courts is a vibrant exhibition exploring the history and culture of India's royal families. There will be film shows, a special display of work by children as well as free art activities for families during the Christmas holidays. To make the show more accessible to disabled visitors and their families the V&A is also offering touch tours and British Sign Language interpreted tours.

Unless otherwise stated pre-booking on all events is essential as places are limited.

V&A Workshops for Adults

Short Course: The Splendour of India's Royal Courts: Indian Miniatures

Course members, guided by Indian miniaturist Hayley Brown, will be taught to draw and paint using traditional techniques such as colour filling and miniature shading. There will be an introduction to the history of Indian miniature painting, demonstrations and a visit to the exhibition. This workshop is suitable for beginners but some painting experience would be an advantage.

The Sky Below - A Film by Sarah Singh

This award-winning film about the Partition of India communicates is message through the music, language and people from both sides of the India-Pakistan border. Sarah Singh will be available to discuss the film after the screening.

Workshop: Indian Style: Dressing Without Seams

Fashion designer Julianna Sissons will teach workshop members how to create garments cut from a single piece of cloth and wrapped around the body to create seam-free tops or skirts.

BSL Interpreted Tour at V&A

This will be an afternoon of Indian-inspired comedy. A British Sign Language interpreted introduction to the exhibition will be lead by comedian Jeff Mirza.

  • Wednesday 2nd December 2009. Meeting Point, Grand Entrance, 14.30-16.30. Free of charge.

Touch Tours at the V&A

Especially for visually impaired visitors, a food tasting session will be followed by a touch tour of the exhibition.

Music from the Courts of the Maharaja of Rajasthan

  • Friday 18th December 2009, Lecture Theatre, 19.00-20.30, £8, concessions £6.

Music once heard in India’s royal courts will be performed by the Dagars, a family of musicians, who were, before Partition in 1947, regular performers in the courts of the maharajas of Rajasthan. The event will include a discussion and readings.

Free Art Fun – Events for Families

Splendour and Sparkle – Holiday activities for families will include the chance to look around the museum and explore Indian royal treasures. Visitors will be encouraged to create their own jewelled sari and turban accessories inspired by the colours, shapes and patterns encountered in the displays.

Action for Children Display

Art Matters: The Maharaja's Procession

Art Matters is a joint collaboration between the V&A, the children’s charity Action for Children, and professional services firm Ernst & Young, sponsors of the V&A’s exhibition. Children across the country have been involved in a series of workshops to recreate ‘The Maharaja's Procession’, the focal point of the exhibition Maharaja – the Splendour of India’s Royal Courts. The results of their efforts are on display in this exhibition.
