This October weekend, Wasps is "exhibiting artists' work...where they work" in 14 studios across Scotland. Over 100 painting artists are showing their art work for sale.

Painting is one of the disciplines organising artists who work in Wasps studios across Scotland. In its seventh year, the Wasps OpenStudios Weekend 2008 offers the one-off chance of “exhibiting artists’ work …where they work”. Today and tomorrow Sunday October 5, 2008, 117 artists will be available to meet people wishing to buy Scottish art direct from the artist in their Wasps studios.

Wasps Hanson Street Studios, Wasps Artists and Painting in Glasgow

Wasps largest building, providing studio space for 200 artists working in the East End of Glasgow Scotland, is the Hanson Street Studios, The Wasps Factory, 77 Hanson Street, Glasgow, G31 2HF. The Wasps Factory, a £2.2 million redevelopment of a former tobacco factory, opened in 2001.

Wasps artists in painting, based at the Hanson Street Studios, Glasgow include:

  • Glasgow School of Art graduates Marie Barbour and Stuart Gibbs
  • Gray's School of Art, Aberdeen graduate Justine McCloy
  • Frank To who has paintings in the private collection of Patrick Stewart, actor
  • Jonathon Meuli, Leona McConnell, Lin Li, Kathryn Pender, Jeff McDonald, Joe Hendry, Shona Barr and Sally Chapman

Exhibiting Wasps Artists in Studios Across Scotland

Wasps first held their OpenStudios Weekend in 2002. This year 's artists will be exhibiting their work in the following venues in Scotland:

  • Langstone Place Studios in Aberdeen
  • Meadow Mill Studios in Dundee
  • Albion Road Studios, Bonnington Mill, Patriothall Studios & West Park Place Studios in Edinburgh
  • King Street Studios, Dovehill Studios, Hanson Street Studios & Pulp Papermaking Workshop in Glasgow
  • Courtyard Studios in Irvine
  • Blue Door Art Studios in Nairn
  • Broomlands Street Studios in Paisley
  • St Mary Mill Studios in Selkirk

Over a hundred artists, from the discipline of painting, working in Wasps studios across Scotland will meet and greet their public directly at their studios on the first weekend of October, Saturday October 4 and Sunday October 5, 2008 including:

  • Peter Macrae working in Wasps Langstone Place Studios, Aberdeen narrates “Current work includes large scale paintings for public spaces in buildings, performance, and the development of “action drawing” using music as motivation”.
  • Gray’s School of Art, Aberdeen graduate, Michael Craik working in the Wasps Patriothall Studios, Stockbridge, Edinburgh, writes that his current work “uses geometric pattern derived from details of architecture to devise a process-led system of painting… My intention is to create paintings that are almost sculptural in appearance; an assemblage of geometric layers, subtly revealed when viewed from different angles”.
  • With a “great interest in textual and 3D art”, Duncan of Jordanstone Art College graduate Vivienne Edgar, an artist working in the Wasps West Park Place Studios in Edinburgh reports “I have developed a technique where fabric is shaped and hardened in an expressive manner to provide a 3D surface for abstract or representative paintings. My paintings are able to illustrate my emotions, beliefs, direction and my admiration of nature.” in her profile.

Visitors to the Wasps OpenStudios Weekend 2008 can be assured of a fine art showcase of the art works from over a hundred artists. Buying Art from an artist in a Wasps studio in Scotland can be completed during the weekend, further private appointments made and individual commissions arranged.
