Whitechapel Gallery – Shows for Summer 2009Picasso's Guernica, Elizabeth Peyton, East End Academy and More
Whitechapel Art Gallery is offering several new exhibitions which feature work by Elizabeth Peyton, David Bomberg, Jacob Epstein, Isaac Rosenberg and others.
The Whitechapel Gallery has recently re-opened after a major expansion and renovation programme which has created new spaces for exhibitions, as well as new study areas and facilities. Exhibitions for the coming year include the following: (In) Parentheses – Lisa Bradley, Duncan McAfee and Eleni Zagkali Three Whitechapel Gallery Artists-in-Residence, Lisa Bradley, Duncan McAfee and Eleni Zagkali, specialists in performance, sculpture, sound and painting, have collaborated with teachers at three secondary schools to create an innovative group show. The installation examines "the limits of place and the activity of (dis)placement through work".
East End Academy: The Painting Edition East End Academy, launched in 1932, is a triennial show open to artists living or working in east London. Past exhibitors include Cornelia Parker, Rachel Whiteread, Antony Gormley. The 2009 exhibition includes only paintings, hence The Painting Edition. The show presents the work of mainly young artists at the start of their careers. The artists were chosen from more than 600 applications which were judged by a panel comprising Gillian Carnegie, painter and Turner Prize nominee; Marion Naggar, collector; Francis Outred, European Head of Post War and Contemporary Art at Christie's; the art critic Barry Schwabsky and Anthony Spira, Director of the Milton Keynes Gallery. The exhibition features pieces by the following young artists: Varda Caivano, Robert Holyhead, Henrijs Preiss, Luke Dowd, Andy Harper, Guy Allott, Lara Viana, Emily Wolfe, Zara Matthews, Bruno Pacheco, Daniel Kelly and the collaboration Cullinan Richards (Charlotte Cullinan and Jeanine Richards). Most of the pieces are for sale and prices can be obtained from the Whitechapel Gallery. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue containing biographies of all the artists involved in the show.
Live Forever: Elizabeth Peyton This exhibition, sponsored by Banana Republic, showcases the work of contemporary American artist Elizabeth Peyton. Peyton is known for her intimate portraits of 19th Century heroes and iconic figures from the world of art, music, fashion and literature such as Ludwig II, Napoleon Bonarparte, Elizabeth II, Liam Gallagher, Jarvis Cocker, Sid Vicious and Pete Doherty. Her work shows how she has been influenced by Northern Renaissance masters such as Hans Holbein or Lucas Cranach, 19th Century modernist painters including John Singer Sargent and Eduard Manet, and even 20th Century artist Andy Warhol.
The Whitechapel Boys This exhibition features items relating to/and by Jewish artists from the Whitechapel area including David Bomberg, Jacob Epstein, Mark Gertler, Jacob Kramer, Joseph Leftwich, Bernard Meninsky, John Rodker, Isaac Rosenberg, Clare Winsten, Stephen Winsten and Alfred Wolmark. The display includes catalogues, correspondence and press cuttings relating to the work and lives of these artists. The exhibition shows how these artists became a lively avant garde despite the impoverishment of life in London's East End. Highlights of the exhibition include:
