After recent major refurbishment and expansion the Whitechapel Gallery is offering a variety of exciting Summer exhibitions featuring work by leading contemporary artists

The Whitechapel Gallery is offering a number of exhibitions during the Summer of 2009 including:

  • British Council Collection – The Third Dimension,
  • A video installation by Patrizio Di Massimo,
  • A display of work by Hannah Richards, winner of the MaxMara Art Prize for Women, and,
  • The Nature of the Beast by Goshka Macuga.

British Council Collection – The Third Dimension

This exhibition, which marks the British Council's 75th anniversary, is one of five shows presented by guest curators.

The Third Dimension, the second of the five shows, charts key points in the progress of sculpture from the 1960s to the present day. The show features works by Antony Caro, Barry Flanagan, Richard Long, Tony Cragg, Bruce McLean, Jim Lambie, Rebecca Warren, Richard Deacon, Bill Woodrow, Michael Landy and Rachel Whiteread.

The Third Dimension is accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue featuring contributions by artist Michael Craig-Martin and visual arts director Andrea Rose.

  • British Council Collection – The Third Dimension will be shown until 20th September 2009

Patrizio Di Massimo

This is a video installation which examines Italy's colonial occupation of Libya. Di Massimo, a recent graduate of the Slade School of Art, London, takes black and white archive material and footage from The Lion in the Desert (Mustapaha Akkad,1981) and mixes it with slices of his own footage filmed in high-definition colour on the streets of modern-day Tripoli and the historical ruins of Libya.

The film is on display in the Zikha Auditorium and forms part of Art in the Auditorium showcasing work by young artists working with film, video and animation.

The project is jointly organised by the Whitechapel Gallery and various institutions from Europe, Asia, South America and the USA.

  • Patrizio Di Massimo can be seen until 20th September 2009

MaxMara Art Prize for Women: Hannah Richards

This display features the work of the winner of the MaxMara Art Prize for Women. It is a biannual award presented to artists who had not yet had a solo exhibition. The prize for 2007-09 has been won by Hannah Richards for her video, sound and installation works.

Richards takes natural phenomenon as her starting point such as birdsong or thunder. In Thunder (2005) a clap of thunder was changed into a musical score by composer David Murphy. It was then recorded by a sextet and played back at a vastly accelerated speed.

The exhibition features an entirely new film based on spoken eye-witness accounts of a view of a city seen over Lake Michigan through strange effects caused by changes in temperature on the Lake. This work forms the climax to Richard's six-month residency at the American Academy in Rome and the Pistoletto Foundation in Biella, which was financed by the Prize.

  • Hannah Richards will be on view in London until 23rd September 2009, after which the display will travel to the Collezione Maramotti in Reggio Emilia, Italy.

The Bloomberg Commission – The Nature of the Beast by Goshka Macuga

Support from the Bloomberg Commission, the Henry Moore Foundation, the Polish Cultural Institute, the Wingate Scholarships and the Adam Micklewicz Institute has allowed the Whitechapel Gallery to host its first Artist in Residence, London-based Polish artist Goshka Macuga.

In creating this unique installation, which features a large circular meeting table (which can be used during opening times) set in front of a life-size tapestry of Picasso's Guernica, the artist has referred to one of the key moments in the history of the Whitechapel Gallery. In 1939 Picasso's painting, which protested against Fascist war atrocities, was hung at the Whitechapel. It was hoped the viewing would increase support for Republican forces fighting in Spain. In 1955 Nelson Rockefeller commissioned the life-size tapestry of Picasso's painting which has hung, for many years, outside the Security Council in the New York Headquarters of the United Nations.

  • The Nature of the Beast can be seen until 18th April 2010.
